What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help a patient relax during dental procedures.  People who choose sedation dentistry usually fall into one or more of these categories:

  • Extreme dental anxiety or fear of visiting the dentist
  • Fear of needles and/or injections
  • Past traumatic dental experience
  • Inability to tolerate smells or noises in the dental office
  • Sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb
  • Need for extensive or complicated dental treatment
  • Back, neck and/or jaw problems

Levels of sedation available include - Nitrous oxide, oral sedation and IV sedation.

Inhalation Sedation - Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is a minimal inhaled sedation. You breathe the nitrous oxide through a mask that is placed over the nose. This gas allows you to relax. It is completely reversed before you exit the office with the use of oxygen. This is the only form of sedation that can be used and allow you to drive yourself to and from the procedure.

Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation is one of the most popular sedation options in dentistry. It is as simple as taking a pill that helps you feel more relaxed and comfortable before your visit. Depending on your medical history and anxiety level, we will choose the oral medication that will provide you the optimal experience.

IV Sedation

IV Sedation is completed with a nurse anesthetist in our office. If this option for sedation is chosen, we will recommend that as much treatment is completed as possible at that time. As with the oral sedation, we will evaluate your medical history.
